Texas Instruments has expanded its connectivity portfolio with a new family of wireless microcontrollers that promises to bring Bluetooth LE (BLE) to a new generation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices at a fraction of the cost and power.

The semiconductor giant said the CC2340 wireless microcontroller family comes in a compact package that draws less than 1µA of standby power, with prices starting at under $1. This translates to a 40% reduction in power at around 50% the cost of similar MCUs, according to TI, making it easier than ever to add BLE to virtually any device. It promises several other areas of improvement, including more on-chip flash memory.

The CC2340R2 (with 256 kB of flash memory) and CC2340R5 (with 512 kB) microcontrollers are the fourth generation of the SimpleLink family of wireless microcontrollers for the industrial, automotive, and consumer markets critical to TI’s future.

With its first BLE microcontrollers released a decade ago, TI said the CC2340 family is a step up from its predecessors, making it more affordable for connecting everything from lights, locks, thermostats and other consumer goods to portable medical devices and industrial sensors. The company consulted with customers over the past decade to dial in the CC2340, landing on what it calls a “sweet spot” of RF performance, power and price.

“This family is the result of more than a decade of listening to developers and our customers, optimizing the way we designed the chip from the ground up,” said Marian Kost, vice president and general manager of the connectivity at TI, during a briefing before Embedded World, where he presented the CC2340.

A wireless war has erupted in the IoT landscape, with companies betting on a wide range of short-range wireless standards such as Wi-Fi, NB-IoT, Cat-M1 and others that frequently overlap. But BLE has become one of the most popular wireless IoT standards: around 35% of all IoT devices use BLE to connect wirelessly to a smartphone or other device, according to market research firm ABI Research. .

As a result, wireless microcontrollers have become a major battleground in the chip market, with companies like Infineon, NXP, Renesas, and Silicon Labs striving to gain more market share. Global shipments of IoT devices with BLE are expected to grow from 5.2 billion units in 2022 to more than 7 billion in 2026, according to ABI Research.

“The affordable price of the device brings a lot of flexibility,” Kost said during a briefing to the in-vehicle world. “It allows developers to add Bluetooth LE to any application that also requires very aggressive pricing.”

TI also boosts the CC2340 family’s RF power output by up to +8 dBm, which the company says is unmatched by BLE microcontrollers in the same class. “This will allow customers to build more robust RF links and extend range and robustness, especially in congested environments,” Kost said. Wireless microcontrollers also incorporate several key RF components that help simplify designs, which in turn leads to cost savings.

With the CC2340R2 and CC2340R5 offering 256 KB and 512 KB of flash memory respectively, the new chips have additional space for the growing amount of software in consumer, medical and industrial devices.

The MCU family also includes 36 KB of RAM which can be used by customers to update firmware and software remotely over time if required. Configurations with additional on-chip memory are in the works.

The CC2340R5 comes in a 5×5mm QFN package, while the CC2340R2 fits in a small 4×4mm footprint. Equipped with up to 26 General Purpose I/O (GPIO), the chips can withstand the harsh temperatures often encountered by industrial sensors or electric vehicle charging systems, ranging from 40°C to 125°C.

At the heart of the new wireless microcontrollers is a 48MHz Cortex-M0+ paired with a 2.4GHz BLE radio in a power envelope that wastes less than 830nA of standby current, 40% less than its competitors.

TI said reducing standby current extends battery life so consumer and industrial IoT devices can last for weeks – and even up to a decade in ultra-low-power wireless sensors – on a coin cell battery.

To get started with the CC2340 wireless microcontrollers, customers can request samples and a development kit for $39. Customers also have access to a BLE software stack that has been supported by TI for over a decade.

The new wireless MCU family is expected to be in volume production by the first half of 2023. Pricing for the family will start at $0.79 in quantities of 1,000 units.

Relays have enabled low voltage signals to control high voltage systems since before the invention of the transistor. With very low on-state resistance, the venerable electromechanical relay (EMR) is still used today, but newer solid-state relays (SSR) offer significant advantages in lifetime reliability, speed of switching, power consumption and shock and vibration tolerance. .

Solid-state relays also offer advantages over photorelays (or optical relays), which face achievable power transfer limits and are prone to internal LED degradation. Solid state relays find use in a variety of automotive and industrial applications, including inrush current limiting and insulation resistance monitoring.

Gate Drivers and Switches

Texas Instruments’ SSR line includes switches with internal FETs as well as gate drivers for use with external power switches, including MOSFETs, IGBTs, silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, and silicon controlled rectifiers . They do not undergo mechanical degradation during their lifetime, which can exceed the lifetimes of MREs by a factor of 10.

The switching times of these SSRs are on the order of microseconds, orders of magnitude faster than those of EMRs. They can transfer both power and signals across their isolation barrier and do not require separate isolated secondary bias supplies. And the devices can be driven by the logic output of a microprocessor, minimizing the need for external control circuitry.

Be aware of one caveat: like all high-speed switches, solid-state relays can generate EMI. Therefore, when using them, follow best EMI design practices, such as minimizing current loops by keeping circuit board traces short.

TI isolation products are available with basic or enhanced levels of isolation using capacitive or magnetic isolation technology. The company’s insulation products use polyimide or silicon dioxide as the insulation material, which have typical dielectric strengths of 300 VRMS/µm and 500VRMS/µm, respectively. In contrast, EMRs and photorelays often use air or epoxy as insulation materials, with dielectric strengths of only around 1 V.RMS/µm and 20VRMS/µm.

Automotive Qualified Products

TI’s new SSR offerings include two automotive-qualified devices: the TPSI3050-Q1, an isolated switch driver with an integrated 10 V gate supply, and the TPSI2140-Q1, a 1400 V, 50 mA isolated switch . Both devices integrate power and signal isolation across a single isolation barrier using a unique approach that improves reliability while reducing solution size and cost compared to electromechanical relays and photo relays semiconductor. Additionally, both can disconnect and connect loads through a single isolation barrier in microseconds, compared to milliseconds for electromechanical relays.

The TPSI3050-Q1 (Fig.1) offers reinforced inductive isolation up to 5 kVRMS and a lifespan 10 times longer than that of electromechanical relays. It reduces solution size by up to 90% compared to mechanical relay solutions by integrating an isolated power supply, digital isolator and gate driver into the IC package.

The TPSI2140-Q1 (Fig.2) provides capacitive base isolation up to 3.75 kVRMS, enabling it to achieve more than 4 times the dielectric breakdown versus time reliability of solid-state photorelays. The SSR reduces solution size by up to 50% compared to traditional solid-state photorelay solutions by integrating a signal FET and resistors, eliminating the need for a reed relay.

The TPSI2140-Q1 can work with a battery monitor such as the BQ79631-Q1 to detect insulation faults in 800 V battery management systems. It allows the use of resistances <1 MΩ and can withstand over 300 % more avalanche current than traditional photo relays.

The new automotive-qualified devices are the first in a new SSR portfolio that will also include ICs for high-voltage industrial applications.

Design Resources

Texas Instruments offers a variety of resources to help you design with its isolation products which, in addition to solid-state relays, include stand-alone digital isolators, isolated interface ICs, isolated ADCs, and isolated amplifiers. Resources include PSpice models and evaluation boards as well as detailed application notes and reference designs.

One application note, for example, shows how to cascode two TPSI3050 isolated switch drivers to increase gate drive voltage and minimize conduction loss in designs incorporating SiC IGBTs and MOSFETs. TPSI3050 floating secondary power supply allows cascode configuration (Fig.3)which can provide gate drive voltage up to 20V.

Another application note shows a TPSI3050-Q1 used in a precharging circuit to minimize inrush currents in automotive on-board chargers as well as industrial power supplies and power distribution systems. The solid-state approach enabled by the TPSI3050 eliminates the need for bulky, failure-prone electromechanical contactors. A response time of less than 3µs allows the TPSI3050 to quickly turn off a switch in the event of overcurrent or overheating.

TI’s reference designs include design guides, schematics, bills of materials, assembly drawings, Gerber files, PCB layout files, and a calculator to help determine critical component values. A reference design implements an analog front end (AFE) for insulation monitoring (Fig.4). It uses the TPSI2140-Q1 isolated switch and the AMC3330 rugged isolated amplifier, which has a ±1 V input and an integrated DC-DC converter.

The AFE can monitor symmetrical or asymmetrical leakage current and measure the insulation resistance between the positive or negative high voltage supply and protective ground. It requires no external power supply from the hot side.

Other reference designs show the TPSI3050-Q1 isolated switch driver used in a zero-cross switching circuit and in an overtemperature and overcurrent protection application. For each reference design, TI fabricated a fully assembled board for testing and performance validation.

Systems using increasingly higher voltages in automotive and industrial applications require reliable insulation to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment. The next TVS Zeppelin is set to launch early next month, and before that its flagship design has leaked online

TVS Motor Company will launch a new motorcycle in the Indian market on July 6. This next model is expected to be the production version of the Zeppelin concept, which was unveiled at Auto Expo 2018. Ahead of its arrival, an image of its flagship has surfaced online, giving us a hint as to what to expect in design terms.

The TVS Zeppelin concept shown at the last Auto Expo had a sleek, futuristic design, with a hexagonal-shaped headlight. However, it now looks like the builder will opt for a neo-retro look for its next cruiser instead. In the leaked image, we see that the headlight is an all-LED unit, with a T-shaped LED DRL in the middle.

The technical specifications have not yet been revealed. The concept model was powered by a 220cc single-cylinder petrol engine, with a maximum output of 20PS and a maximum torque of 18.5Nm. A mild hybrid system was also offered, including a regenerative assist motor of 1200 W and a 48 V Li-ion battery.

TVS Zeppelin headlight leak

We don’t know if this mild-hybrid powertrain will make its way to the production version. TVS could use an existing engine from its motorcycle line instead, likely an Apache RR310 or Apache RTR 200 4V. This is just speculation though, we’ll have to wait for the official reveal to be sure.

We expect TVS Zeppelin to offer plenty of high-end features, such as USD front forks, monoshock rear suspension, fully digital instrument console (with Bluetooth connectivity), fully digital lighting system LEDs, disc brakes on both wheels (with dual-channel ABS), etc. The comfort level should also be good, allowing cyclists to take it for long-distance rides.

When launched, the TVS Zeppelin would be the first cruiser in the brand’s lineup. As for its price, we cannot estimate anything with precision due to the lack of details. Some reports suggest its price might be in the same range as Royal Enfield Meteor 350 and Jawa Perak.

Singer Vehicle Design’s latest Porsche 911 restomod is a fresh, minty beauty.

On Wednesday, the catering house unveiled the latest model in its Turbo Study program. Thanks to this offer, owners can personalize a 911 according to their wishes. Earlier this year, that resulted in a Wolf Blue car focused on grand touring. Now the latest model leans on the sportier side of the vehicle, with a Turbo Racing White body and mint green racing stripes all the way down.

“This specification underscores the wide range of high-performance capabilities enabled by the study, from refined grand touring to a visceral focus on sports,” the company said in its announcement.

A look at the rear view

Of course, you want a sporty car to hit sporty speeds, which is why the new 911 features a power boost to 510 horsepower from the previous version’s 450 hp, according to Road & Track. That comes from the twin-turbocharged, air-cooled 3.8-liter flat-six, which also has air-to-water intercooling. Meanwhile, the suspension has been tuned for sport and the ride height has been lowered and stiffened for better aerodynamics and handling.

On the exterior of the vehicle you will find lightweight carbon fiber bodywork and carbon fiber visuals on the front splitter, shark fin intake and whale tail spoiler. The rear bumpers and rear wiper have been deleted, helping to emphasize the rear’s extra track width. Singer also added his mid-mounted fuel filler, which his old 911 restomod lacked.

Inside, the car is decked out in a bespoke funky houndstooth ‘Grun’ fabric that matches the mint color of the exterior. Up front there are lightweight carbon fiber seats, while a roll cage has replaced the typical rear seats. Elsewhere, you’ll notice lightweight door trim, painted interior surfaces and carbon fiber accents on the dash.

Singer noted that the new 911 highlights the wide range of customizations available through its Turbo Study program, so if you’re looking to drive something no one else really has, now’s your chance.
