Global Navigation Satellite System (NGRx) Bistatic Radar Receiver

INSTANTANEOUS

An SMD-sponsored team is developing a new radar receiver that will allow future space instruments to process more signals and produce data at much higher resolution, greatly improving scientists’ ability to study storms, observe polar ice, forecast floods and measure the height of the sea surface.

In 2018, a constellation of CYGNSS satellites helped researchers collect wind speed measurements from Hurricane Sergio, seen here passing over the Pacific Ocean. An improved bistatic radar receiver will make future CYGNSS instruments even more useful to researchers studying complex earth systems. Image credit: NASA/Jesse Allen

Severe hurricanes cost coastal communities around the world millions of dollars and thousands of lives each year. Knowing more about these complex storm systems would allow researchers to improve predictive weather models and predict severe storms with greater ease.

“We can’t control severe weather, but we can minimize their impact on human populations by giving people more time to prepare,” said Christopher Ruf, professor of climate and space science at the University. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Ruf, who is also the principal investigator for NASA’s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission, has already developed a small constellation of micro-satellites that helps scientists measure wind speed over Earth’s oceans. Now, with support from NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office, Ruf wants to develop a new bistatic radar receiver that will dramatically increase the quality of data collected by future CYGNSS satellites.

“These satellites have been a valuable asset to scientists looking to study not only cyclones, but also things like soil moisture near the surface and the extent of microplastic debris in the ocean. This new receiver will make future CYGNSS system components even more valuable to Earth scientists,” Ruf said.

A Pegasus XL rocket brought the first payload of CYGNSS instruments to low Earth orbit (LEO) in 2016. Spaced about 12 minutes apart, these eight small satellites use signals from existing GPS instruments to observe the Earth by scattermetry. While most scatterometer instruments feature both a transmitter and a receiver, CYGNSS satellites take advantage of existing radar signals to reduce the overall complexity and cost of operating in space.

“Scattermetry uses a transmitter to transmit radar signals to the Earth’s surface and a receiver to determine the strength with which these transmitted signals reflect from Earth back into space. In a single set of instruments, this payload becomes quite heavy. By harnessing transmitted radar signals produced by GPS satellites already in orbit, we can remove the transmitter component from our instruments and continue to produce excellent data,” Ruf said.

But there is room for improvement. CYGNSS satellites currently orbiting the Earth can only process four transmission signals at a time, which limits their accuracy. Additionally, CYGNSS satellites can only process L1 signals, which are transmitted at a frequency of 1575.42 MHz. This negatively impacts the horizontal and vertical resolution of the collected data, making it difficult to use CYGNSS to study phenomena such as ice thickness and polar ice extent.

“CYGNSS has performed remarkably well in recent years, but as we expand its mission to include more scientific areas, we will need to improve certain components of these instruments,” Ruf said.

Its next-generation Global Navigation Satellite System (NGRx) bistatic radar receiver would do just that, increasing the scientific utility of CYGNSS instruments for studying complex Earth systems. Instead of processing only four L1 radar signals from the GPS satellites, future instruments equipped with this receiver could process up to fourteen L1 and L5 radar signals from the GPS and Galileo satellites.

“As a direct result of these changes, horizontal resolution will be improved by a factor of three, vertical resolution will be improved by a factor of ten, and spatial coverage by a factor of at least two, possibly even four,” Ruf said.

This improved resolution will allow researchers to better study storms, more clearly observe the extent of polar ice, develop better models for predicting floods, and even measure the sea surface at a level of detail that surpasses current CYGNSS instruments by a factor of ten.

“Having these capabilities on board small, cost-effective satellites is quite incredible. We will be able to produce great science at a much lower cost,” Ruf said.

NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office’s Instrument Incubation Program (IIP) is dedicated to helping researchers like Ruf develop their instrument concepts into fully functional sensors. Specifically, the IIP provided Ruf with critical funding and expertise for the development of its next-generation radar receiver.

Although the bistatic radar receiver is not quite ready to venture into space, it is ready for major flight testing. Partnership with the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment; the New Zealand Space Agency; Air New Zealand; and the University of Auckland; Ruf plans to attach a prototype of his sensor to a Bombardier Q300 airliner. Ruf’s sensor will collect ocean data as the plane flies over New Zealand, helping his team determine if the instrument is ready for space applications.

“We are delighted to be working with our New Zealand colleagues to prepare this radar receiver for space. Taking something that was just an idea and developing it into a working prototype has been very satisfying, and we’re excited to send this instrument into space one day soon,” said Ruf.

Dozens of record pressing plants have been built in an attempt to keep up with demand in North America – and it’s still not enough.

PORTLAND, Maine — The advent of the compact disc nearly killed record albums, with vinyl pressing machines being sold, scrapped and dismantled by major record labels.

Four decades later, with resurrected record album sales producing double-digit annual growth, manufacturers are rapidly rebuilding an industry to keep pace with sales that hit $1 billion last year.

Dozens of record pressing plants have been built in an attempt to keep up with demand in North America – and it’s still not enough.

The industry “has found a new gear and is accelerating at a new pace,” said Mark Michaels, CEO and president of United Record Pressing, the nation’s largest record producer, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Demand for vinyl records has been growing by double digits for more than a decade, and mass merchants like Target were bolstering their selection of albums just as the pandemic brought a surprising jolt. With music tours canceled and people stuck at home, music lovers started buying record albums at an even faster rate.

Revenue from record album sales grew 61% in 2021 — and hit $1 billion for the first time since the 1980s — far outpacing growth rates from paid music subscriptions and streaming services like Spotify and Pandora, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

Record albums almost fell into oblivion with sales overtaken by cassettes before compact discs pushed them aside. Then came digital downloads and online piracy, Apple iPods and 99 cent downloads. Streaming services are now ubiquitous.

But nostalgic baby boomers who missed flipping through record albums at their local record stores helped fuel a resurgence in vinyl that began about 15 years ago.

It coincided with the launch of Record Store Day to celebrate independent record stores, said Larry Jaffee, author of “Record Store Day: The Most Improbable Comeback of the 21st Century.”

These days, however, it’s not just baby boomers.

A younger generation is buying turntables and albums — and cassettes too — and a new generation of artists like Adele, Ariana Grande and Harry Styles have gone to vinyl, Jaffee noted.

In Pittsburgh, taxi driver Jamila Grady is too young, at 34, to remember the golden age of record stores.

But she finds the records irresistible. She’s created wall art from some of the album covers for nearly 50 albums she’s purchased since 2019, starting with Beyoncé’s “Lemonade.” She admits it’s an indulgence since she already listens to music via Soundcloud, Apple Music and Pandora.

“For record players, there’s something so beautiful about picking up the record, putting it on the paymaster, and dropping the needle,” she said.

Manufacturers had to start almost from scratch.

The majors closed their factories a long time ago, but new ones are coming online. Record manufacturers launched in the last 10 to 15 years include Precision Record Pressing of Toronto, Memphis Record Pressing, Gotta Groove Records of Cleveland, and Quality Record Pressing of Kansas.

Jack White of White Stripes, opened his own vinyl pressing plant, Third Man Pressing, in 2017 in Detroit, and advocated with major record labels to reopen manufacturing facilities.

There are now about 40 factories in the United States – most of them smaller operations – but challenges remain.

Nationally, backlogs are six to eight months as growing demand and supply chain disruptions for raw materials, including vinyl polymers, have caused issues, Michaels said.

Starting a new pressing plant isn’t easy because there are only a handful of companies – none in the United States – that make record pressing machines. These machines are also out of stock.

People can debate sound quality, but it comes down to emotional reaction, not technical specs, said Bob Ludwig, a multi-Grammy winner who started Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, Maine.

A friend who listened to Ludwig’s remastered version of Queen’s “Night at the Opera” called it “superb” and “electric”.

“I love the vinyl experience. Everything. For me, there’s an electrifying sound when I play records that I don’t feel digital,” said Mark Mazzetti, an independent A&R executive who worked for Sting, Janet Jackson and others at A&M Records.

No one knows the ceiling for record growth due to limited supply, said Chris Brown, vice president of finance at Bull Moose Records, a New England record chain.

New releases often fail to keep up with demand, and restocks take even longer, leaving little room for lesser-known eclectic albums, he said.

“Part of the fun of collecting records is being surprised,” he said. “But mid-level stuff is not printed, or there is a long wait.”

Record producers are gathering this week in Nashville for their annual business event called Making Vinyl.

People at the company are excited about the growth, and it’s almost like “printing money” for manufacturers as sales soar to new heights every year, said Bryan Ekus, president of Making Vinyl.

No one knows how long the race will last, so there’s a feeling that “we should be making hay while the sun is shining,” Ekus said.

In Nashville, United Record Pressing was started in 1949 and never stopped churning out records. It is currently in the midst of a $15 million expansion that will triple its capacity by the middle of next year.

Michaels can’t help but wonder how long double-digit growth can be sustained, but he says he’s optimistic about the future.

It’s both heartening and good for business to see high school kids and young adults taking an interest in records, he said.

“I believe in music and I believe in the importance of music in people’s lives. I don’t think that’s changing,” he said.

Sharp reported from Portland, Maine.

Eating tacos on a patio is great. Eating them on a rooftop terrace is even better.

McDevitt Taco Supply, which has grown steadily in Boulder County since rolling out its first taco cart on the Pearl Street Mall in 2011, will open a location in Denver inside the newly completed Vib Hotel, at 3560 Brighton Blvd., in the River North Art District, on June 28.

It will serve happy hour burritos and coffee on the first floor and a full menu of tacos, sandwiches, wings and other dishes on the eighth floor rooftop terrace. Both spots will be open to the public.

“It has a view of the Front Range and a view of the city,” says Bradford McDevitt, who also has a physical location at 4800 Baseline Road in Boulder, a permanent truck at Sanitas Brewing in Boulder, and a travel cart for festivals in Boulder. music. “I couldn’t be more excited.”

Courtesy of McDevitt Taco Supply

McDevitt Taco Supply started in 2011 with a taco cart on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder.

McDevitt first signed with Vib (pronounced Vibe) in 2019 when the project was supposed to kick off. But delays, including the pandemic and supply chain issues, have delayed construction. The 140-room hotel is part of a new boutique brand for Best Western International, and there are only two other US locations, in Tempe, Arizona and Springfield, Missouri.

And though the hotel is targeting a hip crowd, Jennifer Gipfert, Vib’s property and project manager, said she doesn’t want McDevitt Taco to be pigeonholed. “It’s a laid-back Colorado rooftop where everyone is welcome…and there’s something for everyone.” For Gipfert herself, that means the restaurant’s wings, which she says are “the best wings I’ve ever had.”

Running a restaurant on a rooftop can be a challenge because there’s no connection at street level with people walking or driving, but Gipfert said she doesn’t think that will be a problem. especially since the hotel is located a few blocks from the Mission Ballroom. “What I really love about Bradford and his team is that they have a cult following, for lack of a better word, and people really go out to find them without them having to do a ton of marketing. “

Just down the street, the Source Hotel also has a rooftop restaurant, Woods, which it has partnered with New Belgium Brewing on. Other hotel rooftop restaurants in Denver include: Red Barber inside RiNo’s CatBird Hotel, 54thirty Rooftop at downtown Le Méridien, Fire at the Art hotel on Broadway, and Kisbee on the Roof at the Jacquard Hotel in Cherry Creek.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said Thursday that gas is now a shortage in the country.

Other comments

The current situation should not lull us into a false sense of security.

We are now called upon to reduce gas consumption in anticipation of winter.

Wants to emphasize that this situation has always been a threat.

The political mistake of the past of not developing renewable energy must be corrected immediately.

Whether or not we trigger a price clause, consumers will pay more.

All political measures must be taken to ensure that we have enough gas, this burden shared equitably.

Triggering the price increase clause would mean businesses could immediately pass on price increases.

If gas does not arrive via Nord Stream 1 after maintenance, further action is required.

Nations that go it alone cannot function in this situation.

The development of LNG terminals is progressing well.

Are far from being able to ensure the supply, but must take precautions.

Trax gives shippers visibility into the performance and cost of carrier services, while Truckstop provides carriers with integration technology and legal compliance by lane, carrier and region.

By working together, the companies aim to provide supply chain insights that should iron out issues in shipper-carrier relationships.

“Visibility into fare selection is key and making on-time payments and having working capital are key to maintaining good business relationships,” said Chris Cassidy, executive vice president of global sales and strategic partnerships. at Trax. “One of the goals of this partnership is to create value for shippers and carriers with joint solutions that improve carrier onboarding and rate management selection efficiency by accessing data in real time. real on market rates for full loads.

Trax operates in North America, Latin America, Asia and Europe. Trax states on its website that it has 64,000 active accounts managed through seven offices and helps with 8 million loads per year.

In February, Trax reached an agreement that allows the company to offer extended payment on invoices owed to it.

To date, the rush for non-fungible tokens has largely centered on “ownership” of images, artwork, and similar types of digital files. So what does this latest manifestation of the virtual universe have to do with the day-to-day reality of supply chain management?

An NFT is essentially a string of code that gives the buyer the right to supposed sole ownership of the digital asset it represents. (“So-called”, because owning the NFT that is related to a work of art or writing, for example, does not necessarily mean that the buyer owns the copyright in the work. And, for images available online, the purchased artwork often continues to be available to everyone, even if they don’t “own” it.)

One would therefore think that the fuzzy nature of NFTs and their dubious relationship to the real world would disqualify them from being used in the movement of physical materials and products around the world. But Shlomi Amouyal thinks that is not the case.

The CTO of Verte, an e-commerce platform vendor for omnichannel retailers, believes NFTs have an important role to play in ensuring transparency of product status throughout the supply chain . This is especially the case, he says, for manufacturers operating on a “just-in-time” model to get parts and components, from multiple suppliers, to the assembly line. By being able to track the status of each part, they can anticipate and possibly prevent disruptions to the production flow.

NFTs become viable instruments of supply chain visibility when combined with blockchain, Amouyal says. Each NFT is a unique set of digital data that is stored on a decentralized, distributed ledger. Blockchain advocates claim that the data in question is immutable because it resides on so many nodes that it is protected from modification by unauthorized parties.

The manager of an end-to-end supply chain can associate a unique NFT with each manufacturing order, with the data accompanying the physical goods along their journey, Amouyal explains. It may include details such as a specific product’s identity, origin, current location and condition, with the information constantly updated as the status and ownership of that item changes. As a result, “you know exactly what individual product you have, from the time it’s made all the way to the customer.”

As with blockchain itself, many of the earliest applications of NFTs to the supply chain involved high-priced luxury goods, which are particularly susceptible to counterfeiting and theft. They could also prove invaluable to producers of expensive materials for high-tech applications such as microprocessors and networking components.

Amouyal further sees the potential of NFTs in managing the complex returns process, with the ability to track an item from the consumer to a warehouse and then determine if that item should be recycled, repaired, re-shelved, sold to discounters or destroyed. .

Blockchain has been touted for years as a way to track and trace goods throughout the supply chain. But NFTs add the ability – in theory at least – to tag individual products with unique identifiers. “You could have hundreds of NFTs on the blockchain, each with a different signature,” Amouyal explains.

Applied to fast-moving supply chains, NFTs have some of the same potential drawbacks as blockchain itself, including the time and cost required to publish data; the need for “miners” to create the necessary blocks, in exchange for tokens or a variety of cryptocurrency, and the massive amounts of energy required to carry out this activity.

Indeed, Amouyal acknowledges, the mining process is based on “proof of work,” whereby aspiring miners are required to solve brutally difficult mathematical equations, collectively using more energy than that consumed by entire countries. (The subsequent validation of NFTs, by contrast, is based on “proof-of-stake,” a much less energy-intensive process, he notes.)

None of these concerns will prevent NFTs from playing an important role in global supply chain management, Amouyal believes, although they are far from being fully adopted by most companies. “I think they still have some way to go to be formalized and adopted by the industry,” he says.

Santa Ana, June 17, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Santa Ana, Calif. —

Santa Ana, California, June 2022: A recent guide published by LabTech Supply Company highlights key considerations when planning a lab table. The report was compiled by its lab technology design experts and published on LabTech Supply Company to help labs determine their top priorities for a custom lab table.

Designing the right lab tables can be a difficult task. To improve workflow and maximize space, laboratory furniture should be specially designed so that workers can concentrate better. Finding the perfect lab furniture at an outlet store can be tricky. Workers may not have enough space to move around, or work may be cluttered, leading to accidental spills and damage to instruments. This leads to work disruption and additional costs. Investing in bespoke lab furniture solutions can help labs avoid all of these complications by giving them the size, shape and features they need to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. This publication addresses the need for custom work tables for laboratory workers.

According to LabTech Supply Company, the report was produced after extensive research by their experts. The report mainly focuses on the important factors to consider while planning a custom lab table. The new article sheds light on special features that meet the specialized needs of a lab worker. The report’s experts explained eight key considerations when designing a workbench, including ergonomics, versatility, accessibility, and storage options. The report was published in their regular research on custom lab tables. The full report can be found here: https://www.labtechsupplyco.com/8-considerations-in-planning-a-lab-table-with-drawers/.
