Another round of explosive inflation reports rocked the markets this week.

On Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released data showing that consumer prices continue to rise at the fastest rate since 1982. The all-items index rose 7% in the past 12 months ending in December. The energy index has increased by 29% over the past year.

Then on Thursday, the producer price index entered with another month of increase for December to close the year. Overall, final demand prices rose 9.7% in 2021. This represents the largest calendar year increase since the data series was released in 2010.

PBS News Report: And the latest consumer price report shows that costs continue to climb for Americans in many categories. This raises real questions for the Federal Reserve, which is responsible for promoting stable prices.

Fox News Report: Now the consumer price index just rose 7%, the biggest jump since the height of the Cold War. Meanwhile, Americans are flooding social media with photos of empty stores and the #BareShelvesBiden hashtag.

Close. Joe Biden: The shelves are not empty. Experts including Wall Street suggest that it is highly unlikely that it is long-term inflation that will spiral out of control.

The pains of inflation are pinching consumers’ wallets. And after months of being told by the Federal Reserve and the White House that price increases are nothing to worry about, they are tired of lies and excuses.

President Joe Biden’s jobs approval rating has dropped to just 33%, according to Quinnipiac. Of course, he is not solely responsible for the inflation and supply chain disruptions plaguing the economy.

Congress imposed massive fiscal stimulus in response to COVID. And the Federal Reserve stepped in to help fund the government’s borrowing spree. The central bank has started buying $120 billion in Treasury bills every month. And despite plans to scale back its asset purchases, it will buy another $60 billion in January.

Central bankers are way behind the curve when it comes to monetary tightening. The federal funds rate remains close to zero. This puts the gap between the federal funds rate and the inflation rate at an all-time high.

Holders of cash and low-yielding debt securities experience extremely negative real returns. Negative real rates have persisted for some time. But they may not persist long before existing bag holders look for alternatives to preserve their purchasing power.

Gold will surely play an important role as a counterweight to our failing monetary system. Central banks around the world could routinely ditch US dollars for gold in their reserves. And individuals can choose to use their own personal gold standard or bimetallic standard by holding physical gold and silver as their currency.

In other news, we are pleased to announce that Money Metals has just been named the “Best Overall Dealer” in the United States for 2022 by Investopedia.com, a leading authority on the global investment industry. .

As I mentioned a moment ago, Investopedia praised Money Metals’ high-quality news and educational content. A big part of our mission is to promote healthy money awareness to the general public, beyond our own customer base.

Money Metals supports the Sound Money Defense League, which advocates for sound money legislation at the state and national level.

2021 has been a big year for strong financial efforts across the United States. Several state legislatures have introduced bills to end sales taxes on gold, silver, platinum, and palladium coins and bullion. And now 42 states have removed all or part of the taxes on the purchase of precious metals.

Building on last year’s momentum, promising new sales tax repeal bills are already being considered by lawmakers in Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.

States generally do not tax the purchase of stocks, bonds, ETFs, currencies and other financial instruments. Taxing precious metals is an unfair punishment for some savers and investors. It is also counterproductive since such taxes push business activity into neighboring states that do not impose them.

Individual states alone cannot bring strength to the US monetary system. Regardless of the policies they adopt, the Federal Reserve will continue to recklessly increase the currency supply.

With the consumer price index at its highest level in 40 years, inflation has become the pressing economic problem of our time.

Citizens can protect themselves from the ravages of Fed-fueled inflation by securing a significant portion of their wealth in durable assets, including gold and silver.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The official opening of the Enmarket arena has been delayed due to supply chain issues and the recent surge of COVID-19, Mayor Van Johnson said during his conference weekly press release Tuesday.

“Frankly, I think we promised a little too much and in our anticipation of too many promises, we ignored the realities of the times we live in,” Johnson said.

Johnson says the rest of the work is due to be completed in the coming weeks and the required inspections will follow, allowing the arena to fully open by February.

“We anticipated the arena to open without any disruption,” Johnson said. “I think we didn’t think we would have the omicron variant that affected our contractors.”

Several events scheduled for this week have been canceled, including the tour stop of Earth, Wind & Fire and country music singer Riley Green. The Riley Green show is postponed to February 6 and the Earth, Wind and Fire concert is postponed to February 9. The city said ticket holders will be contacted directly.

“It is disappointing to have to step back and hit the pause button when Savannah’s new Enmarket Arena opens after announcing an expected opening date late last year,” said Johnson. “However, this disappointment does not eclipse the need to be sure we have a complete and safe facility, with all the necessary inspections on hand, that is ready to welcome the Savannahians for music, laughs and memories in the years to come.”

However, the city has no plans to cancel upcoming shows The Eagles, Jon Bon Jovi, or Keith Urban.

“The goal is still to do it right, to do it right,” Johnson said of the city’s desire to refrain from cutting corners in the construction and opening of the arena.

While the delay was disappointing for event fans, Johnson assured that they would eventually appreciate the two-week delay to properly complete the arena.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is reported.

Ensuring the supply of medicines to patients in Europe – POLITICO https://u-one-music.com/ensuring-the-supply-of-medicines-to-patients-in-europe-politico/ Mon, 10 Jan 2022 07:04:19 +0000 https://u-one-music.com/ensuring-the-supply-of-medicines-to-patients-in-europe-politico/ Our industry’s ability to reliably deliver medicines to patients across Europe has come to the fore during the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis. Our industry’s ability to reliably deliver medicines to patients across Europe has come to the fore during the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis. Almost overnight, borders were closed, export restrictions were put in place, and air freight options were simply gone. I am proud to say that despite an exponential increase in the demand for certain drugs, the research-based pharmaceutical industry has been able to increase its capacity, in some cases by as much as 300-400 percent, and manage the supply problems to the point that not a single member of EFPIA reported an interruption in the supply of finished products during this extremely difficult period.

Nonetheless, we should never underestimate the frustration and concern of patients, their families and clinicians when the medications they depend on are not available in their hospital or pharmacy. The initial phase of the pandemic saw disruptions in the supply of medicines to other segments of the industry, as well as difficulties for patients to access our medicines due to problems with the distribution of products after they left. our factories.

This is why we are committed to building on the reliability of the innovative pharmaceutical sector for the future. As an active participant in the EU Structured Dialogue on Security of Medicines Supply, we continued to deliver solutions to help protect patients across Europe from the impact of shortages across the medicine supply chain. Avoiding shortages is a goal shared by all stakeholders. However, drug supply chains are complex, with many players involved, and disruption can occur at any point in the chain. We need the active and coordinated commitment and support of all to resolve issues and minimize any negative impact on patient access. Supportive and agile regulators are also essential to achieve this goal.

The starting point for addressing drug shortages is to use all the available evidence to understand the extent and root causes of the problem. European citizens deserve a state-of-the-art, interconnected shortage monitoring system. The good news is that the technology and the data already exist in the data repositories of the European Medicines Verification System (EMVS). By using this data to monitor drug shortages, we can go a long way to truly understand the root causes of shortages, and then find solutions that ensure drugs get to patients where and when they need them.

A harmonized European definition of drug shortages and greater clarity as to when a shortage should be notified to the authorities would help to minimize any negative impact on patient access. This should take a risk-based approach – focusing on critical products with a high medical need, or those with a sensitive supply chain.

Supply readiness and proactive pandemic preparedness planning have been crucial in rapidly scaling up manufacturing during the pandemic.

Supply readiness and proactive pandemic preparedness planning have been crucial in rapidly scaling up manufacturing during the pandemic. Going forward, policies should ensure that all manufacturers have prevention plans in place for the most relevant products. This should focus on a limited number of critical products of major therapeutic interest, and avoid unintended negative consequences limiting the supply of drugs in other countries.

In addition, very practical measures such as flexible national labeling requirements or electronic patient information brochures would allow a more flexible distribution of products across the EU. Using these tools can improve our ability to prevent and mitigate the impact of drug shortages, enabling authorities to anticipate and act in partnership with relevant players in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Our industry invests heavily in manufacturing at the cutting edge of science and innovation – from modular manufacturing to cellular and mRNA technologies, as well as greener techniques. There are significant benefits to ensuring that the right policy framework is in place to support this investment taking place here in Europe, as it is a solid foundation for avoiding drug shortages in the future.

It is vital to maintain various global supply chains that have shown their resilience time and time again, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

So what does the policy framework look like to stimulate innovative manufacturing and support the supply of medicines in Europe? It is vital to maintain various global supply chains that have shown their resilience time and time again, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that the EU is the largest exporter of medicines in the world, with a global market share of 63.8% (383 billion euros), we must avoid the policies of harsh instruments like ‘relocation’ which would endanger this incredibly successful model. Especially since the innovative research-based sector already sources 76 percent of its active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from Europe, a nuance that is often overlooked in discussions of policy responses to supply issues.

Recent events have underscored that resilience begins with research. Creating an environment that fosters and supports innovation, including in the manufacturing sector, is the first and most important step in supply chain resilience going forward. Europe owes its limited international dependence on APIs and finished drugs to its historic leadership in pharmaceutical research and innovation. Research and development lead to innovation; and innovation leads to first-mover advantage in advanced production. This is the cycle that supports more than 800,000 direct jobs in the European pharmaceutical sector. But this dynamic is changing rapidly. In the 1990s, Europe was the main destination for investments in pharmaceutical R&D; this position has shifted to the US coupled with intense competition from China, other parts of Asia, Switzerland and the UK Unless the EU now acts through From revising pharmaceutical legislation to creating a policy framework conducive to innovation, production is likely to follow the same trajectory as investments in R&D.

Instead, taking the right steps to boost drug supply will support Europe’s economic recovery through a vibrant pharmaceutical sector. They will protect and promote the health of patients through reliable supply and the adoption of new technologies. And they will increase resilience in the face of future health crises. If the EU is ready to set itself an ambition for global leadership in pharmaceutical innovation through its pharmaceutical strategy, then our industry is ready to work with the EU and member countries to make this a reality.

Container terminal in the port of Klaipeda, Lithuania, May 13, 2021. (Ints Kalnins / Reuters)

Late last year, Lithuania, one of the three Baltic states and a member of the EU and NATO, agreed to let Taiwan open a “representative office” (a de facto embassy) in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. In itself, this is not particularly unusual. There are such outposts elsewhere, but normally they are timidly described as Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices. Beijing should not be offended, you see.

This is a message which does not seem to have reached the Lithuanian government coalition. Under the terms of his coalition agreement, he pledged to “defend those who fight for freedom in the world, from Belarus to Taiwan”. Having been occupied by Tsars, Soviets and Nazis, Lithuania has good historical reasons for supporting both self-determination and democracy.

And words were followed by deeds. In May 2021, Lithuania withdrew from the 17 + 1 deal, a Chinese initiative aimed at deepening trade ties between China and 17 countries in central and eastern Europe. Then came the creation of the Taiwanese “representative office”. Beijing was duly offended. China downgraded Sino-Lithuanian diplomatic relations shortly thereafter, and, following a script that has been used before (australian wine, Norwegian salmon), at blocked Lithuanian imports. But this time around, the embargo came with an additional twist.

Earlier this week, I noted this from a Reuters report from December:

China is pressuring German auto parts giant Continental to stop using components made in Lithuania, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters, amid a dispute between Beijing and the Baltic state over Taiwan’s status …

Continental, one of the largest auto parts manufacturers in the world, has production facilities in Lithuania, manufacturing electronic parts such as controllers for vehicle doors and seats, and exports to customers all over the world including China. .

German industry sources said the pressure was not only being felt by Continental but up to a dozen companies, mostly in the automotive and agricultural sectors, they said. . .

And these companies are not only German.

Elisabeth Braw in the The Wall Street Journal:

In 2020, Lithuania exported goods worth $ 350 million to China, an increase from previous years, but peanuts in overall trade. Lithuania has long imported much more from China than the other way around; last year, about four times more. So, the Lithuanian government may have calculated that the country’s economy could bear any retaliation that China inflicts for the gesture on Taiwan.

But the Lithuanians probably did not foresee a Chinese attack on global supply chains. “We now know of many cases where imports from Lithuania and the EU are blocked in Chinese ports, and their number is increasing every day,” Valdis Dombrovskis, EU trade commissioner, told German newspaper Die Welt little before Christmas. “Apparently, the Chinese customs authority does not process goods from other EU member states if they contain parts made in Lithuania.”

As Braw notes:

Targeting global supply chains to punish a country is an extremely powerful weapon. It is one that China, a powerful player in the global economy, can deploy in a way the Soviet Union was never able to deploy.

This story is yet another reminder that the Chinese challenge, unlike that attempted by the USSR (which was, relatively speaking, an economic pygmy with only a limited trade relationship with the West) is, as Braw points out, one that can also be pursued on the economic front. This, in turn, has to do with the massive Chinese tech momentum that’s also underway (something I’ve discussed here).

France, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency (it’s complicated), signals that the EU will be alongside Lithuania.

Politics:

The EU intends to deploy a new commercial weapon called “Anti-coercion instrument” to retaliate in precisely such cases, but that new legislation could take years to come into full force, and Paris is signaling that action on Lithuania would be needed long before that.

When asked if Paris would push the EU to act to resist Beijing before the anti-coercion instrument is ready, a senior French government official told POLITICO on Thursday: “Yes. We will take action very quickly.

We will have to see what these measures will be.

However, this particular spat ends (there were signs of wobbling President of Lithuania, although this may be partly explained by Lithuanian domestic policies), this is just the latest sign that the companies (and countries) suing Chinese companies have taken a far greater risk than they didn’t seem to have understood it, a risk that will become clearer as the links attached to this trade become more visible, as they will elsewhere.

Researchers studying coral reefs damaged by rising sea temperatures have found an unexpected ‘bright spot’ of hope for communities who depend on them for their food security.

Coral reef ecosystems support a variety of small-scale fisheries and the fish they catch are rich in micronutrients essential to the health of millions of people in the tropics, a new study from Lancaster University shows.

And, counterintuitively, as a result of bleaching events that kill corals and can transform the makeup of reef ecosystems, reef fisheries can remain rich sources of micronutrients, even increasing the nutritional value of some minerals.

The results, published in the journal A land, show that the availability of micronutrients from artisanal coral reef fishing may be more resilient to climate change than previously thought. This increased understanding is essential as continued global warming means that coral bleaching events are becoming more frequent and severe, placing increased stress on these vulnerable ecosystems.

Dr James Robinson, who led the study, said: “Our results underscore the continued importance of these fisheries to vulnerable coastal communities, and the need to protect against overfishing to ensure the long-term sustainability of the fisheries. reefs.

The researchers also caution that while these fisheries have proven to be more resilient to climate change disturbances than expected, understanding of the long-term impacts of climate change on coral reef fisheries and more data continues to emerge. other regions are urgent priorities.

More than 6 million people work in artisanal fisheries that depend on tropical coral reefs. Their catches help feed hundreds of millions of coastal people in areas with a high prevalence of malnutrition, causing stunting, wasting and anemia. However, until now, the nutritional composition of coral reef fish catches and how climate change might affect the nutrients available in reef fisheries has not been known.

This study, led by scientists at Lancaster University and involving an international team of researchers from Seychelles, Australia, Canada and Mozambique, benefited from more than 20 years of long-term monitoring data from the Seychelles, where tropical reefs were damaged by a large coral bleaching event in 1998, killing around 90 percent of the corals.

As a result of the mass bleaching event, about 60% of the coral reefs recovered to a coral-dominated system, but about 40% were transformed into algae-dominated reefs. These differences provided scientists with a natural experiment to compare the micronutrients available in reef fisheries with different climate-related ecosystem compositions.

Scientists, who used a combination of experimental fishing, nutrient analysis and visual surveys of fish communities in Seychelles, calculated that reef fish are important sources of selenium and zinc and contain minerals. levels of calcium, iron and omega-3 fatty acids. comparable to other foods of animal origin, such as chicken and pork.

They also found that iron and zinc are more concentrated in fish caught on reefs that were processed after coral bleaching and are now dominated by macroalgae such as Sargassum algae. These algae have high levels of minerals, which the researchers say is one of the main reasons that herbivorous fish feeding on algae that are found in greater numbers on processed reefs contain higher levels. high iron and zinc.

Robinson said: “Coral reef fish contain high levels of essential dietary nutrients such as iron and zinc, therefore contribute to healthy diets in places with high fish consumption. We have found that some rich reef species micronutrients become more abundant after coral bleaching, allowing fishing to provide nutritious food despite the impacts of climate change Protecting the catches of these local food systems should be a food security priority.

The researchers believe the findings underscore the need for effective local management to protect the sustainability of reef fisheries, as well as policies that further retain reef fish catches for local people and promote traditional fish-based diets. . These can help reef fisheries make the best contribution to healthy diets across the tropics.

Professor Christina Hicks, co-author of the study, said: “Fish are now recognized as essential for alleviating malnutrition, especially in the tropics where diets can lack up to 50 percent of the micronutrients needed for healthy growth. This work is promising because it suggests that reef fishing will continue to play a crucial role, even in the face of climate change, and underlines the vital importance of investing in the sustainable management of fisheries.

The results are described in the document “Climate-induced increases in micronutrient availability for coral reef fisheries”.

The authors of the study are: James Robinson, Eva Maire, Nick Graham and Christina Hicks of Lancaster University; Nathalie Bodin from Seychelles Fishing Authority and Sustainable Ocean Seychelles; Tessa Hempson of James Cook University and Oceans Without Borders; Shaun Wilson of the Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and the Oceans Institute, Australia; and Aaron MacNeil from Dalhousie University.

Industrial metals have mostly entered the new year on solid footing, although trade in the first days of 2022 has been somewhat mixed. Nickel fell more than 2% as supply-constrained metals continue to expand their gains, with aluminum outperforming the complex as soaring electricity prices threaten supply and fundamental positivity boosts momentum.

The light metal jumped more than 3% on Wednesday (January 5) in the London session, with 3M contract hitting an intraday high, at $ 2,938 / tonne – a two-month high, before hawkish minutes of the Fed do not bring down the whole complex. Thursday.

In the meantime, there have been heavy cancellations of LME warrants for three consecutive days, mainly from the warehouse of LME Malaysia, which could potentially lead to large outflows, sparking optimism about the high spot demand. Inventories should have started to accumulate in the Chinese onshore market according to seasonal patterns. But instead, these continued to decline this week to reach around 790 kt on Thursday, well below the five-year average. This helps allay concerns about a seasonal lull in demand.

As we move into 2022, European generators are still plagued by high electricity costs and there appear to be no signs of a quick fix to the problem. Base electricity prices rose not only at the start of the curve, but also in long-term contracts. We have seen several producers in the region announce activity reductions at the end of 2021, and the risk of supply growth is still on the downside. We forecast a deficit for the aluminum market in 2022 (Outlook 2022: aluminum will sink into a deeper deficit). With low gas storage and high volatility in the gas market, many uncertainties surround the European electricity market. It would be difficult for smelters to secure a competitive electricity deal in this market.

In Asia, however, Indonesia’s latest coal embargo rocked regional energy markets earlier this year, risking supplies to its major buyers, including China, India and Japan. The situation has remained fluid there as consumers like Japan have called for the ban to be lifted, and domestic coal miners are request exemptions. Indonesian authorities are reported to have held a meeting to review the ban following the refoulement on Wednesday, but there has been no confirmation at the time of writing. During 4Q21, India managed to avoid a significant impact on aluminum production despite dropping coal stocks to critical levels, as their industry association called for increased coal imports. As for China, the worst impacts of the electricity crisis in the fourth quarter are now in the mirror thanks to the strong intervention of the authorities to stimulate the national production of coal. Meanwhile, the demand for electricity in winter has so far remained within a reasonable range. Still, the Indonesian embargo could have little impact on China in the short term, as national power plants have large stocks of coal to supply electricity. However, an extended embargo by Indonesia would risk shipping coal shipments to India and delaying the restart of aluminum in China.
