Europe must prepare for even a complete cut in Russian gas supply
Europe must prepare now for another gas supply disruption and even a complete cut off of Russian gas supplies, said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, during the plenary debate of the European Parliament, reports Trend.
“Just to give you a figure: today, 12 Member States are already directly affected by the partial or total cut off of Russian gas. This is why the Commission is working on a European emergency plan. We will present this plan and the necessary instruments by mid-July. Member States have their national contingency plans and that is good. But I think we need European cooperation and we need joint action of the 27. We need to ensure that in the event of total disruption, the gas flows where it is most needed. We must ensure European solidarity and we must protect the single market as well as industry supply chains,” she said.
The EU presented its REPowerEU plan and the sanctions against Russian coal and oil come into force.
With the REPowerEU plan, Europe will accelerate the deployment of local renewable energy, reduce energy consumption and switch to more reliable alternative suppliers.
