James Addoms, Jeff Polak and Alex Wissing all met at Fort Lewis College in Durango, where the large bluegrass community that exists in southwestern Colorado influenced their creativity and songwriting. Jeff and Alex were in a funk band together, and James decided to pick up the mandolin and join them, first playing with Jeff before asking Alex to join in and start playing double bass and bass. acoustic. Thus, Steepland String Band was born.
Of course, this wasn’t their first exposure to the music world. Addoms started classical guitar lessons in seventh grade, and her mother loved music and always played it around the house. Polak took guitar lessons from an early age, and Wissing’s father played the double bass, so that influence remained throughout his life.
Addoms cites some of the group’s influences as Yonder Mountain String Band, Sam Bush and Del McCoury. He says bluegrass in general is a welcoming format for music, because much of it is based around jamming circles, playing music together and changing who gets the solo in a certain part. He also says that he’s very beginner-friendly, allowing musicians to get a foothold and figure out which instruments they want to play, and that he incorporates many different kinds of influences into his sound.
Addoms says the creativity that comes with writing and performing music is very liberating for him. As a student of English writing with a focus on poetry, he says there aren’t many outlets for him to earn a living as a poet, so writing songs and making music is the perfect outlet for him. He says the immediate gratification of seeing a crowd listen to a song is very therapeutic and rewarding, and the performance itself is often soothing. He hopes that those who attend Steepland String Band performances will have a great time and recognize the value of bluegrass as a welcoming and fun style of music.
