School supply giveaways, vaccines, free food and more are coming to South Chicago this weekend

SOUTH CHICAGO — Community groups are teaming up for a back-to-school giveaway this weekend in South Chicago.

Neighbors can enjoy free food, music, a game truck, shop at local vendors, and get resources from local organizations from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at 8800-9000 S. Commercial Ave ., according to a post on Facebook.

There will be a limited distribution of school supplies for students, who must be present to receive the supplies.

COVID-19 vaccines will also be available. People who get vaccinated on Saturday can receive a $50 gift card. There will be first, second and encores available. To reserve a gift card for a vaccination, people should email connecttoyaf@gmail.com. Gift cards will be held for pickup from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

People getting vaccinated are asked to bring their insurance card and ID card, although insurance is not required. Walk-ins are welcome.

Partner groups for the event are Youth Advocacy Foundation, Bridges Puente: Justice Collective of the Southeast, Chicago Department of Public Health, Phalanx Family Services and Victory Pharmacy of Calumet City.
